South College Road Church of Christ: About Us

Christians began to meet in Lafayette, Louisiana in the fall 1938. These people first met together in the American Legion Hall, then in City Hall and then in the Jewish Temple. They were able to erect a suitable building in 1948 at Oaklawn and W. College Street. Men such as Richard Dean, Bob McClung, Bryan Vinson, Jr., Oliver Murray, Jesse M. Kelley, Harry Pickup, Jr. and Dan Woodruff located in Lafayette to work with the church who met in this location. Unfortunately, in January 1958 a split was necessary because some brethren refused to walk according to the Scriptures. By the fall of 1958, a new meeting house was erected at 507 S. College Road by those brethren who sought to work and worship according to the New Testament. The church still meets in this location today. Many godly men have proclaimed the Gospel within the confines of this edifice over the years. Many more faithful brethren have practiced and defended the faith along side of these Gospel preachers. The present members of the South College Road church are thankful for the efforts and zeal of the brethren who have worked here before us. Today the church is overseen by two elders, served by two deacons and supports one local evangelist. We strive together in the cause of Christ and are at peace with one another. We endeavor to have the same mind and same judgment on all matters of faith. We assemble twice each Sunday for worship; at 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. We assemble for Bible study, with classes for every age group, on Sunday mornings at 9:00 and Wednesday evenings at 7:00. We also meet for an adult Bible study on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. during the school year. We are willing, at the convenience of interested individuals, to meet for Bible studies in the home. We offer Bible studies through written correspondence to all who are interested. Further, in addition to all of these regular efforts to teach the Gospel, we have two or three protracted Gospel meetings each year. We also support, as opportunity and ability dictate, men who preach the Gospel in other places. We provide benevolent assistance to needy brethren as the need arises according to our ability. We pray that we do all things in a manner that glorifies and honors our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And with the Lord’s help, we know we will be effective in our efforts to be the pillar and support of the Gospel in Lafayette, Louisiana.
